Good Morning Church

I love that greeting. On Sunday morning beginning with the musicians everyone that spoke said "Good Morning Church" and everyone responded "Good Morning". The message was on the Justice of God - Politically, socially and divinely. It was very appropriate for what this country had gone through in the past 3 months. He challenged the Christians to make a difference and allow God to bring about Justice from Amos chapter 5.

On Sunday evening we went to a couples house that are on staff with AIM named Jim and Becky, they live in the same house as Marv and Jan did 4 years ago and spoke to a group of youth. The topic was "gaining the mind of Christ" as Phil 2:5 tells us. WE then looked at the words of Jesus in the 4 gospels as recorded in red and ended with Rev 22 as a reminder that Jesus is coming back soon.

Dr. T Ready to Operate

Ok, here is about my only chance to be in a surgery room. As you can see it was empty. We visited Kijabe African Inland Mission Hospital and two of the missionary physicians gave us a tour. One was from Australia and the other from Silina, Kansas.
We then visited Rift Valley Academy which is the AIM School for missionary kids in Africa. The students just began a month long break, so we only visited with a few people and had a nice picnic on the grounds.
On the way back to Nairobi we stopped at a lookout over the great Rift Valley and were attacked by sales people. We did not even take a picture and bought all kinds of junk that will go in the closet when we get home probably. We all got a good laugh when we headed down the hill realizing that we had stopped to see the view but we were the attaction and bait and did not even snap a picture. We might have a few items to sell when we get back in our next garage sale.
Jan fixed another great dinner, homemade pizza.
We are thanking the Lord that we are all doing well physically. Each night we have been here however, in the middle of the night we have heard the most vicious cats fights I have ever hear about 3 in the morning. It sounds like screaming little babies and goes on for about 10 minutes each time.

Our First 24 horus in Africa

The flight was long with a few delays but we made it to Nairobi Airport and were met my Marlene's twin brother and his wife who have been serving with Africa Inland Mission (AIM) for the past26 years. They were excited to have thier first visitors from Marvin's side of the family and we were sure glad to see a welcome face. By the time we got to their home, we carried all our luggage up the 4 flights of stairs and tucked into bed by 1:00 a.m. Early the next morning, Kyle, Marvin and I went to the AIM (African Inland Mission) aviation headquarters where I did a teaching session on "Maintaining a Heart for God" I shared about King Amaziah in 11Chron 25:1-2 where it tells us he served God all his life, but not with a whole/loyal heart. I shared some symptoms of a divided heart, some filters to catch the thief of our heart, the road back from a divided heart to a heart commited wholeheartedly to God. Ps 51:10 reminds us that even the great King David cried out to God to create a clean heart in us. The pilots, mehcanics and staff were very attentive as they sipped on their hot tea with suger and cream.

We toured the AIM Aviation Hanger and offices and got to sit in the cockpit of the Samaritan's Purse DC3 first built in 1945. Marvin is the Executive director for all of AIM in Eastern Africa and has a busy week planned for us. After visiting his offices and meeting his staff we headed home for a short nap. The first evening Marvin and I helped one of the single young missionary ladies move to another home. It was pouring down raining and we felt like the Clampetts from the Beverly Hillbilly's TV series from years ago as we put her box springs and several other things strapped to the top of the land crusier since the inside was packed with all her other things. Her apartment was about 10 X 10 and you would not believe all the stuff she had in that little space. She moved into a larger suite of about 11 X 11. We were soaked when we got home and got tied up in a traffic jam for about an hour.
Overall a great first day.

Up and Away!

A quick update from Kelly here...

Some of you may have seen on the news that American Airlines cancelled 200 of their flights this morning. The first flight of the trip to Kenya was one of them. Mom, Dad, Kyle, Vanessa and the boys were supposed to leave at 12:45 this afternoon on a flight to Chicago. When they found out the flight was cancelled, they quickly scrambled to find another flight to Chicago. The only flight they could get on left at 10:35 this morning. They quickly packed everything in the car and rushed to the airport to make the flight and they did! Myself, Tom, April and the kids all made it to the airport to say goodbye to them as well. What a morning! The rest of their itinerary should be the same. I took this info from Kyle and Vanessa's blog...

Leave Tulsa: 12:45pm (March 26) (changed to 10:35 am!)

Arrive in Chicago: 2:35pm (more like noon now)

Depart Chicago: 6:25pm

Arrive in London: 7:20am (March 27)

Depart London:10:05am

Arrive in Nairobi: 9:30pm

Keep them in your prayers as they have a long few days of traveling ahead of them. Pray for Hudson (3) and Jude (6 mo) during all the flights. Especially pray for the hearts of all those they will minister to in Kenya over the next five weeks.

Dear Friends and Family,

Marlene and I will be heading to Kenya, Africa from March 26th to April 29th, 2008. We are excited about the opportunities we will have to minister there in many different ways. First, we will have the opportunity to visit Marlene’s twin brother Marvin Smith and his wife Jan who have worked in Kenya for the past 30 years with Africa Inland Mission. This will be our first visit with them on the field. Marv has asked us to share at an AIM missionary conference for both adults and teens the first 4 days after we arrive in Kenya. He has asked me to speak to these groups. My topics are still to be determined but I have some ideas! You can be praying for me as I prepare. Marlene will have the opportunity to go with Jan to visit some of the Muslim women she has been trying to minister to for some time. Pray for open hearts and ears as they share Christ with these women.

Then we will be heading to Tenwek Hospital – a World Medical Missions hospital in Bomet, Kenya for the remainder of our time. We will be serving with our son Kyle and his wife Vanessa and two sons Hudson and Jude. Kyle is a resident physician with In His Image Medical group and will be administering medical care to the patients. Vanessa and Marlene will take turns helping in the hospital as well as taking care of Hudson (3) and Jude (6 months). In addition, Marlene and I will be scrubbing the bedpans, cleaning, washing clothes, mopping and if they let me – assisting with any surgeries or procedures they deem okay. I was raised in a home where my dad was a general practice physician, my little brothers are doctors, my son is a physician, my son-in- law is a dentist, and both my mom and sister are nurses, so I figured some of that must have rubbed off on me, right? Well, maybe not. When I wrote that I would be willing to help in those areas, they still accepted me, but said they have restrictions on who can do surgery and assist with medical care – so I guess that’s out for me. Maybe I can clean toilets…at least I know for sure that I am good at that job! Most importantly we are there to serve in any way they need us and we have heard they need helpers that are willing to do whatever – that’s us. They have 300 patients (each personally prayed for daily by the staff and volunteers) in this hospital and we have been invited to be a part of the mission statement of the hospital which states that “Tenwek Hospital is a Christian community committed to excellence in compassionate health care, spiritual ministry and training for service”. We are just excited to be a part of serving as the Lord leads. We can’t wait to be involved in the lives of people and then sharing it with you when we return.

As many of you know, there has been a great deal of civil unrest in the country of Kenya. God has prepared us to go and be a part of what He has for us and we know He will be glorified. We have complete confidence that this is His timing and that God will protect us and use us as He sees fit. We have been reading the book, ‘To Africa with Love’ and ‘Improving your Serve’ as well as other materials on indigenous religions and how to deal with those involved as we prepare to go. We count it a privilege to be a part of God’s kingdom work.

We would appreciate your prayers as we take part in this special trip of service to Kenya and the people God has prepared us to be a part of their lives. Tenwek Hospital is a part of World Medical Missions. If you would like to participate in any way, the address is World Medical Missions, Samaritan’s Purse P.O. Box 3000 Boone, NC 28607 and the project code is 010638.

Thank you for your prayers for God to use us as He sees fit. Our upcoming blog for updates is www.travisandmarlene.blogspot.com

God desire for our life is that we be a people dedicated to kingdom business, set apart for God since we belong to God and want to declare the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His wonderful light.
